By the second full week of May, New York starts leaning more fully into outdoor season.
The city feels busier again, but in a lighter way than it does later in summer. Parks stay active longer into the evening, waterfront spaces become part of everyday routines again, and spring events begin overlapping naturally across neighborhoods.
If you’re looking for things to do in NYC this week, the second full week of May brings outdoor movies, spring festivals, food markets, art exhibitions, and seasonal events across New York City.
This week in NYC (May 11–15)
Throughout the week, several longer-running spring experiences continue shaping the atmosphere across New York.
At One World Observatory, Yoga in the Sky continues offering elevated morning classes above the city skyline, while every Sunday in May, CorePower Yoga studios host free community flow classes across NYC.
Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s new Costume Art exhibition is now open through January 10, 2027, adding another major cultural stop to the season.
On May 11, Bryant Park continues its Piano in Bryant Park series from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM, bringing live piano performances into Midtown during the middle of the day.
By May 12, the city shifts between quieter community events and creative gatherings.
At Bryant Park, Books on Broadway: Death Becomes Her takes place from 12 PM to 1:30 PM, while Bronx Park hosts a River Cleanup event from 9:30 AM to 12 PM, offering a more hands-on outdoor experience connected to the city’s green spaces.
On May 14, Summer on the Hudson hosts a guided Forest Bathing experience from 10 AM to 11:30 AM, inviting participants to reconnect with nature through a slower-paced walk along the waterfront.
That same week, Smorgasburg returns once again with its May 14–17 schedule:
World Trade Center — Thursday, May 14 & Friday, May 15
Williamsburg, Brooklyn — Saturday, May 16
Prospect Park, Brooklyn — Sunday, May 17
All locations run from 11 AM to 6 PM as outdoor food culture continues becoming part of the city’s everyday spring rhythm again.
By May 15, the atmosphere becomes more social and cinematic across the city.
At McNally Jackson in the Seaport, Library Science founders Kaia Gerber and Alyssa Reeder discuss new literary media and the inaugural issue of the Library Science periodical at 7 PM.
Later that evening, Movies Under the Stars returns across multiple boroughs:
Finding Nemo in Manhattan
Zootopia 2 in Brooklyn
Ratatouille in Queens
The Incredibles in Staten Island
As temperatures continue warming up, outdoor movie nights begin feeling fully part of the season again.
The weekend in NYC (May 16–17)
As the weekend arrives, the city becomes noticeably more active outdoors.
Photoville Festival officially begins on May 16 in DUMBO at Emily Warren Roebling Plaza, launching several weeks of photography installations and outdoor exhibitions running through May 30.
That same day, Park Avenue Day transforms sections of Manhattan from 10 AM to 8 PM, while Taste of Tribeca returns from 11:30 AM to 3 PM around Greenwich and Duane Streets, bringing together local restaurants and outdoor community energy downtown.
Along the waterfront, Brooklyn Bridge Park hosts its Kite Festival at Pier 5 from 11 AM to 3 PM, adding another softer outdoor moment to the weekend atmosphere.
In Queens, the Bayside Historical Society hosts a Gravestone Preservation Workshop at Lawrence Cemetery from 10 AM to 12 PM, while Fort Greene Park Conservancy offers a free Black History and Culture Tour from 11 AM to 12:30 PM.
By May 17, the weekend slows down slightly again.
Brooklyn Bridge Park hosts an Outdoor Sketchbooking meet-up from 10 AM to 11:30 AM, focusing on architecture and observational drawing along the John Street section of the park.
Meanwhile, Central Park’s Conservatory Water continues welcoming visitors looking to rent model sailboats through Sail Central Park, one of the city’s quieter spring traditions once warmer weekends fully return.
Through May and beyond
As May continues, the city keeps layering outdoor routines, cultural events, and slower spring moments into everyday life.
What defines this part of the season isn’t necessarily one major event.
It’s the way everything begins overlapping naturally at the same time — waterfront walks, outdoor films, live music, spring festivals, food markets, parks, art exhibitions, and evenings that stay brighter a little longer.
New York starts feeling more open again.
Less centered around winter routines.
More connected to being outside, moving through neighborhoods, and letting the city unfold more casually from one day to the next.
From outdoor movies and spring festivals to waterfront walks and cultural events, mid-May continues becoming one of the best times to experience New York City. And by mid-May, that shift becomes impossible not to notice.
