One of New York City’s most iconic cultural events returns this June as Fifth Avenue transforms into a car-free museum corridor for one unforgettable evening of art, music, and community.

The 48th Annual Museum Mile Festival brings together some of NYC’s most important cultural institutions for a free, citywide celebration stretching along Museum Mile on the Upper East Side.

For one night only, visitors can walk along Fifth Avenue while enjoying free access to museums, outdoor performances, live music, and interactive art experiences.

What is the Museum Mile Festival?

The Museum Mile Festival is one of New York City’s longest-running cultural traditions, first established in 1978 to make art and museums more accessible to the public.

Each year, it transforms a section of Fifth Avenue into a pedestrian-only cultural route, allowing visitors to explore world-class museums for free while enjoying outdoor programming along the way.

Now in its 48th edition, the festival continues to highlight NYC’s identity as a global center for arts and culture.

When and Where

  • WHEN: Tuesday, June 9, 2026

  • TIME: 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM

  • WHERE: Fifth Avenue (Museum Mile), from East 82nd Street to East 110th Street

  • PRICE: Free admission

During these three hours, Fifth Avenue becomes a car-free cultural walkway filled with performances, installations, and public activities.

Participating Museums

Visitors can enjoy free access (or special programming) at some of New York City’s most iconic museums, including:

  • Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum

  • Neue Galerie New York

  • Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum

  • The Jewish Museum

  • Museum of the City of New York

  • El Museo del Barrio

  • The Africa Center

  • The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)

Together, these institutions showcase everything from contemporary art and design to history, photography, fashion, and global culture.

Special Programming & Activities

Beyond museum visits, the entire Museum Mile becomes an open-air cultural festival.

Expect:

  • Live music performances

  • Outdoor art installations

  • Creative workshops and art-making stations

  • Family-friendly activities

  • Street performances and cultural showcases

Several neighborhood partners also participate, adding even more variety along the route, including cultural institutions, community organizations, and performance spaces.

Why This Event Matters

The Museum Mile Festival is more than just a museum night — it reflects New York City’s commitment to accessible culture.

By opening major institutions to the public for free, the event transforms one of Manhattan’s most prestigious streets into a shared cultural space where art becomes fully accessible to everyone.

It’s one of the rare moments where locals and visitors can experience NYC museums not in isolation, but as part of a continuous cultural walk through the city.

Looking Ahead

If you’re planning to explore New York City in early June, the Museum Mile Festival is one of the most unique cultural experiences of the month.

Whether you’re interested in art, history, architecture, or simply discovering the city in a different way, this one-night event offers a rare opportunity to experience NYC museums side by side in a completely open setting.

As summer begins, events like this highlight why New York remains one of the most vibrant cultural cities in the world.
